About this tour

Mexican politics is complex, layered, and deeply rooted in history — shaped by revolutionary figures, social movements, and the realities of everyday life today. This walk brings those stories to life in a way that feels less like a tour and more like a live documentary unfolding around you.

Led by a knowledgeable local guide, this immersive experience connects past and present through engaging storytelling, visual materials, and on-site discussions. You’ll explore themes such as political movements, social inequality, informal economies, government power, migration, urban growth, and the challenges facing Mexico City today — all explained in a clear, accessible, and thought-provoking way.

Rather than staying on the typical tourist path, you’ll walk through the real heart of Mexico City. From historic landmarks to non-touristic neighborhoods and bustling local markets, you’ll discover places most visitors never see, while gaining insight into daily life and the forces that shape the city.

This experience is honest, nuanced, and non-biased. It doesn’t shy away from difficult topics — instead, it encourages open conversation, critical thinking, and curiosity. Questions are always welcome, and discussions often evolve naturally as the city itself becomes part of the narrative.

Perfect for curious travelers, history lovers, and anyone interested in understanding Mexico beyond the surface, this walk offers meaningful context that will deepen the rest of your visit.

This walk is conducted in English by default. If you would prefer to join in Spanish, please inform us so we can confirm availability.

This is a wonderful tour! Gustavo’s knowledge on the political and social history of Mexico and Mexico City is unmatched, and we got to see parts of the city off the beaten path. A great tour to start your trip and learn a few things in the process.

Exceptional tour. Be prepared to walk a lot and view many unique, non-tourist areas of the city. Our guide was deeply knowledgable about history and politics as well as current challenges with the informal económico and water supply

This was the best tour of my 2-week visit to Mexico City. I couldn’t get to our planned meet-up location because of a protest that closed the Zocalo plaza, but Gustavo didn’t miss a beat and found me quickly. The protest and the government’s reaction to it was the perfect launch into Gustavo’s narrative that included important historic events from 100 years ago to the present. The tour is really well organized with stops in shady spots to study informative materials and diagrams that help you understand the complexities of the social and political stories while standing in the exact locations of important historical events. The tour through the Sonora and Merced markets and the Merced neighborhood was a huge bonus and one of the highlights because you get to see the incredibly interesting fusion of west African religions and a modern new religious practice with Catholicism. This tour takes you through the real heart of the Centro, hidden in plain sight if you know where to look!
