We like to go beyond the typical tourist experience when we travel and learn more about reality for the people who live there. Our guide, Gustavo, did that with discussions about political history, government repression in modern times, and current social issues. We got to see the Centro Historico from a different perspective. He was great about answering even the most random questions and gave us an excellent recommendation for lunch—and for an exhibit featuring a printmaker from the Taller de Grafico Popular which exactly suited our interests.

This tour takes you behind the scenes of the social/ political history of Mexico City. Learn about the city government and political parties and social movements that have shaped the city. See parts of the Centro Historico not normally suggested to tourists. Gustavo is very knowledgeable and generous with his time. Highly recommended.

We took the Social/Political Tour given by Gustavo in January 2026. Gustavo was very knowledgeable, had a binder with extra, supporting information, and was really well-organized (including planned bathroom breaks). The tour really helped us to see beyond the surface, as it touched on issues of political structure and conflict, immigration and internal migration, and the question of how to deal with the sinking city. A good chunk of the tour focused on Mercado Merced (but not on the food). We returned the next day for a food tour there and had zero overlap in our experience. Rather, the information we had received from Gustavo allowed us to more deeply understand this vibrant institution. If you have any interest in the complex society that is Mexico today, I urge you to take this tour with Gustavo. (And be sure to ask about Casa Nela- a fantastic Oaxacan restaurant he alerted us to.)

We cannot recommend this tour highly enough! Gustavo did an amazing job teaching us about the political history of Mexico City, and we learned a lot from him. He is a super knowledgeable, personable, engaging guide. His tour is a highlight of our trip!
